1. HEEEEE’S BAAAAAAA-AAACK: Barry Brust was superb in a 38 save shutout that needed overtime and six rounds of a shootout to determine which team would win. The Kelowna product has loved playing the Monsters this season – posting three shutouts against the North Division rivals. Brust was as calm as ever and kept the wandering out of the net to a minimum (just a few adventures). He’s now got five shutouts on the season tied for second in the AHL.
2. SERIES SUCCESS: Despite being out-chanced over many of the eight games this season against the Monsters, the Heat took 13 of a possible 16 points. Incredible. The hockey gods have smiled on the Heat in the season series, but they’ve also always had a veteran puck-stopper up against a rookie. Not quite a pick ‘em in the crease over the eight games. I’ll take the established puck-stoppers.
3. SHOOTOUT SWAGGER: Today’s win in the shootout gives the Heat their fifth win in nine tries in the contest for the extra point. It wasn’t always so easy. The Heat had just two wins in their first six shootout games, but have now won three in a row. The Heat scored on three of six attempts tonight, but also had Krys Kolanos ring the crossbar, and Max Reinhart hit both posts on a deke that somehow stayed out. This group is finding their swagger!
